Description
This tropical treasure transforms ripe papayas into a golden, silky jam that preserves more vitamin C than store-bought spreads. With just three simple ingredients, this homemade papaya jam delivers restaurant-quality results in under an hour.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs fresh papaya (ripe but firm)
- 3 cups granulated sugar (or coconut sugar / reduce to 2½ cups for less sweetness)
- ½ cup bottled lemon juice (or fresh squeezed)
Instructions
- Wash, peel, and deseed papayas, then cut into ½-inch pieces.
- Place papaya pieces in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring often until they begin to soften.
- Simmer covered for 15 minutes until fork-tender.
- Mash with a potato masher to your desired texture.
- Stir in sugar and lemon juice until dissolved.
- Return to a gentle boil, stirring frequently, for 20–25 minutes.
- Test consistency on a chilled plate—jam should hold its shape.
- Skim foam, then ladle hot jam into sterilized jars leaving ¼-inch headspace.
Notes
Choose ripe but firm papayas for the best texture. Always sterilize jars properly and don’t skip the lemon juice—it ensures safe preservation.
